Being Poor.
At age 12 my parents sent me out to work. Well, not a full-time job but I did a paper round after school. This was hard for me during the winter months so it only lasted a short time. My parents took most of the money I made to help supplement the household.
From here I did a Saturday job in a menswear shop around 10 miles from my home. I had to get a ride with the Manager of the shop, so left my home at 7.00 a.m. in the morning, and arrived home at 7.00 p.m. at night. This was back in 1961 and I was paid $1.20 a day. I had to give my parents 80 cents of it and I was left with 40 cents for the week.
I couldn’t wait until I became 15 and could leave school and get a real job. The sensible part of me decided to go to night school for 2 years and become a shorthand typist. This was a way out of our poverty.
