You have it bad now? I don’t think so.

We lived in a 2 story house with no bathroom and only a small coal fire in one room. The winters were really cold in England and I used to go to bed with my clothes on. There was mold on the ceiling, which looked eerie and scared the hell out of me. I used to sleep with the covers over my head.

Friday night was bath night. I was the youngest so I would sit in the tin bath, in front of the open fire, and my mother would pour hot water into it from a kettle and saucepans. I would get my weekly hair wash at the same time. From here I would go to bed and my brother had his bath.

After us my parents used the same water to take theirs and kept topping it up with more kettles of water.

We never had a bathroom at this house so I think you can see why I married at age 19 so that I could move into a more modern house.
